Fragrant Futures (2018)

…considering the role of our senses in world-making…

FRAGRANT / FUTURES (2018) is a research project that invites guests to explore possible futures for our ecology through their nose. Our sense of smell has been regulated as a tool for recognising and knowing and yet it could prove powerful in unlocking the imagination and framing new narratives. For The Science Gallery Dublin’s blockbuster exhibition Life At The Edges , I was commissioned to create an interactive installation that would engage visitors in conversations about life at the extremes. Three scented ‘artefacts’ were ‘excavated’ from three extreme natural scenario’s - ‘Technofloral’, ‘Bioremediated Earth’ and ‘Supervolcanic’. The show was attended by 33,000+ visitors across 3 months an the mediators remarked “[Becky’s work] was loved by our mediator team. It was piece designed for conversation, reflection and personal opinions with the potential to open up a number of doorways to various realms of conversations.”
